Green Tea Plus Soy Slows
the Growth of Breast Cancer
Study description: Researchers studied the
effects of tea components and soy phytochemicals on the progression of breast
cancer in lab animals.
Type of study: Animal
What happened: Adding green tea to the drinking
water of mice with estrogen-dependent breast tumors led to a statistically significant reduction in
tumor weight of 56%. But when soy phytochemical concentrate was added to the
green tea, the results were even better, reducing tumor weight by
72%. The combination of green tea and soy also slowed
the tumors' ability to develop the new blood vessels they need for growth, and
interfered with the actions of estrogen receptors. This is an intriguing finding
for diseases like breast cancer which need estrogen to continue to grow.
Researchers' conclusion: Green tea plus soy
phytochemical concentrate "may be used as a potential effective dietary regimen
for inhibiting progression of estrogen-dependent breast cancer."
