Green Tea Delays Onset of Breast Cancer in Animals Exposed to Carcinogen

Study description: Two groups of rats were exposed to DMBA, a chemical carcinogen used to induce breast cancer. Both groups were given the same diet, but one group was given water to drink while the other was given green tea water.

Type of study: Animal

What happened: The rats given green tea water remained tumor-free for a significantly longer period of time than those given plain water. And when they did develop breast tumors, the tumors were significantly smaller.

Researchers' conclusion: "...green tea had significant chemo-preventive effects on carcinogen-induced mammary tumorigenesis in female S-D rats."
