Green Tea Extract Blocks Formation of Stomach-Cancer
Producer
Participants: 135 patients at high risk of
stomach cancer were divided as follows: 45 with chronic gastritis, 45 with intestinal metaplasia
(abnormal intestinal cells), and 45 with atypical hyperplasia (irregular
overgrowth of intestinal cells) and gastric cancer.
Where: Chinese Cancer Research Foundation
Association, China
Study methods: Scientists examined patients with
a gastroscope looking at the effect of green tea extract on the formation of
nitrosamines, powerful stomach cancer-producing compounds.
What happened: Green tea extract blocked
the synthesis of the nitrosamine N-nitroso-proline, with a blockage rate of 91% in chronic
gastritis, 94% in intestinal metaplasia, and 93% in atypical hyperplasia and
gastric cancer.
Researchers' conclusion: "These results
will be of great significance in preventing gastrointestinal cancer."
