Green Tea
Protects Against Stomach Cancer and Chronic Gastritis
Participants: 133 people
with stomach cancer, 166 people with chronic gastritis (a risk factor
for stomach cancer), and 433 healthy people (the control group).
Where: Yangzhong City,
an island on the Yangtze River southeast of China. (This area is known
for its very high rate of cancers of the digestive tract.)
Type of study:
Population-based case-control
Study methods:
The researchers collected standard epidemiological data (medical
history, family history of digestive cancer, dietary habits, smoking
habits, weight, history of alcohol intake, etc.) from all volunteers.
What happened: Among those who did not
drink alcohol, the green tea drinkers had a 48% lower risk of stomach
cancer and a 50% lower risk of chronic gastritis than non-green tea
drinkers. The risk of stomach cancer and gastritis decreased even more
as the dosage and years of green tea drinking increased.
Researchers' conclusion:
“The results provide further support on the protective effect of green
tea against stomach cancer. This is the first time that green tea
drinking was found to be protective against chronic gastritis…”
