Green Tea Polyphenols Reduce Number of Gastric Tumors
Study description: Lab animals were exposed to
two different substances that can cause cancer of the forestomach or lung, diethylnitrosamine
(DEN) and benzo(a)pyrene (BP). Some
of the animals had been given green tea polyphenols in water 30 minutes before being exposed
to the carcinogens, some had not.
Type of study: Animal
What happened: Green tea water reduced the
number of forestomach tumors caused from exposure to DEN by 71% and BP
by 66%, per animal.
Researchers' conclusion: Giving green tea
polyphenols to lab animals before exposing them to cancer-causing substances
"may afford protection against carcinogen-induced tumorigenesis in internal body
organs."
