Green Tea
Protects Mice Against Powerful Carcinogens
Study description:
Mice were exposed to powerful carcinogens known to cause cancers of the
stomach and lung. Some of the mice received green tea extract in water
at various points during the experiment.
Type of study:
Animal
Study methods:
At the beginning of the experiment,
one group of mice received green tea extract in water while the other group
did not. Then, all of the mice were exposed to the cancer-causing substances
diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and benzo(a)pyrene (BP), in order to induce tumors in the
forestomach and lungs. Some mice continued to receive green tea water during
the post-initiation period and throughout the length of the experiment.
What happened: In the mice who
received green tea water throughout the experiment, there was
a decrease in the number of mice who developed tumors
and the number of tumors that developed. The mice developed up to 82% fewer DEN-induced stomach cancers and up to
66% fewer BP-induced tumors, thanks to green tea.
Researchers' conclusion:
“…green tea possesses chemopreventive effects against carcinogen-induced
tumorigenesis in internal body organs…”
