Green Tea Polyphenols Reduce Number of Lung Tumors
Study description: Lab animals were exposed to
two different substances that cause cancer of the lung or forestomach --
diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and (benzo(a)pyrene (BP). Some
of them had been given water containing green tea polyphenols before
being exposed to the carcinogens, others had not.
Type of study: Animal
What happened: Per animal, the green tea water reduced the
number of DEN-related tumors by 41% and BP-related tumors by 39%.
Researchers' conclusion: Giving green tea
polyphenols to lab animals before exposing them to cancer-causing substances
"may afford protection against carcinogen-induced tumorigenesis in internal body
organs."
