Green Tea Decreases Mortality After Heart Attack
Participants: 1900 patients who had
experienced a heart attack four days earlier
Type of study: Prospective cohort
Study Methods: The patients were
interviewed 4 days after experiencing a heart attack about their caffeinated tea
consumption habits during the prior year. A follow-up interview was conducted
with the same patients (if they were still alive) approximately 4 years later.
What happened: Those who had routinely
consumed caffeinated tea in moderate amounts (about 2 cups per day) during the
year before the heart attack had a 31% decrease in the risk of dying during the
4 years following the heart attack. Those who drank more than 2 cups per day
decreased their risk of dying by 39%.
Researchers' conclusion: "Self-reported
tea consumption in the year before acute myocardial infarction is associated
with lower mortality after infarction."
