Green Tea Polyphenols Combat Plaque

Participants: 150 volunteers

Study description: The study was designed to test the plaque-reducing effects of a tablet containing green tea polyphenols.

Where: China

Type of study: Randomized controlled trial

Study methods: The volunteers were divided into three groups of 50 each.

  • Group A was given a polyphenol tablet three times a day for 3 weeks, then a placebo tablet three times a day for the next 3 weeks.

  • Group B was given a polyphenol tablet 3 times a day for 6 weeks.

  • Group C (control group) was given a placebo tablet three times a day for 6 weeks.

What happened: After 2 weeks, the plaque index (buildup of plaque on the teeth) in the groups taking the green tea polyphenol tablet was lower than it was in the control group.  This effect continued for an additional 3 weeks after use of the polyphenol tablet was stopped.

Researchers' conclusion: "It can be concluded that polyphenol tablet from Chinese green tea has evident anti-plaque effect."
