Green Tea Extracts Combat Root Canal Bacteria
Study description: Twenty-four different
bacterial strains were taken from the infected root canals of intact teeth. They
were then mixed with 4 different types of Japanese green tea (refined, ordinary,
coarse and roasted).
Type of study: "Test-tube"
What happened: The four types of green tea
demonstrated antibacterial action against numerous strains of bacteria taken
from infected root canals. Twenty-one of the 24 bacterial strains were inhibited
in growth or destroyed by some or all of the tea extracts.
Researchers' conclusion: "...extracts of
Japanese green tea may be useful as a medicament for treatment of infected root
canals."
