Green Tea Suppresses the Growth of Cavity-Causing
Bacteria
Study description: In the lab, green tea extract was mixed
with Streptococcus mutans, the number one cavity-causing bacteria.
Type of study: "Test-tube"
What happened: Green tea extract inhibited the
growth of Streptococcus mutans. The catechins gallocatechin, epigallocatechin and epigallocatechin gallate
were particularly effective.
Researchers' conclusion: The results of this
study support "the idea that green tea polyphenols can inhibit the growth of
S. mutans and prevent the cause of caries."
