Green Tea Catechins Slow the Rate of Fat Accumulation

Study description: Lab animals were fed a high-fat diet intended to make them obese. Then their diets were supplemented with either 0.5% or 1% green tea catechins (EGCg). Body composition, food intake, and food digestibility were recorded over a 4-week period.

Type of study: Animal

What happened: Adding EGCg to the diet caused a dose-dependent reduction of body fat accumulation. That is, the more EGCg consumed, the slower the weight gain, despite a diet designed to ensure obesity. Food intake was not affected, but the energy content of the feces was slightly increased by EGCg, indicating a decrease in food digestibility and a somewhat lessened absorption of calories.

Researchers' conclusion: "Dietary EGCg attenuated diet-induced body fat accretion in mice."
