GREEN TEA
HELPS COMBAT OBESITY
Green tea has recently become the
latest weapon in the war on weight. But does it really work? The studies are
promising. Although most tests have been performed on laboratory animals, at
least one with humans showed that taking in the equivalent of 3 cups of green
tea per day burned an additional 80 calories per day. That
may not sound like much, but it adds up to more than 7 pounds a year -- without
changing anything else!
Green tea appears to fight obesity by increasing the rate of calorie burning, reducing body fat
levels and preventing excess weight gain. How does it do this? There are several
theories:
1) It revs up the fat-burning effects of brown fat, a
special kind of fat that creates heat by burning calories at a very high rate.
2) It sends glucose to muscles, where it's used for
energy, rather than to fat tissue, where it's stored.
3) It inhibits the action of fat-digesting enzymes,
making the fat from food less available to
the body.
4) It lowers the body's production of fatty acids, blood fat and
cholesterol.
